Today Mission Control uses a similar structure where the engineers who designed a piece of equipment are available during EVA. They sit in a room called the Mission Evaluation Room (MER) and when the crew runs into a problem such as a bolt that won't turn, the person who can answer the exact torque tolerances of that bolt is available on the loop. I don't know what the history of this structure in mission control is, but it's very likely that it's due to the occurrences that happened during apollo 13.

Not for several years. Hold-up at the National Archives.

If you listen to 13 Minutes to the Moon podcast season 2, they explain John Aaron’s role. He’s also interviewed.

This is very interesting, indeed. Thanks for finding it!

What interesting research! I wonder if any papers were published at the time about this result. Thank you very much for contributing this to the forum.

Unfortunately, those tapes are yet to be digitized. It will happen at some point but probably not for years.

General Discussion / Re: Some help with OCR radio transcripts?
« on: June 24, 2023, 12:49:32 pm »
Thanks very much for your kind words, I'm glad you're enjoying Apollo in Real Time!

It sounds like you're starting from scratch if you're contemplating using the scans of the typewritten transcripts. Digitizing these into something useable has been a big part of our project, and the OCR problem was a big one https://benfeist.com/digitizing-apollo-17-new-ocr-techniques/

I recommend you pull our copies of Apollo 11, 13, and 17 directly. You can download them here:
https://apolloinrealtime.org/11/indexes/utteranceData.csv
https://apolloinrealtime.org/13/indexes/utteranceData.csv
https://apolloinrealtime.org/17/indexes/utteranceData.csv

For other missions, there has been an effort to crowdsource digitizing those transcripts through a project called "spacelog" that was born out of a hackathon actually. You can read about it here https://www.hannahdonovan.com/spacelog
There are quite a few mission transcripts in the "mission" folder of their github: https://github.com/Spacelog/Spacelog in their own text format.

I hope you find this helpful!

I think "booster dummies" might refer to the people who have been using the booster console as a phone booth. Apparently, post launch with booster being vacant and also down in the far corner of the MOCR, booster console was the place to go to make phone calls via the console, and of course these have all been recorded and are available here.

Retro talks to all the backroom leads about how everyone who worked on saving the crew can't all come and watch entry in the MOCR.

I contacted Heather on Facebook and sent her the link to your post here. She was very happy to hear this.

That's Tony England talking to his wife Kathi about their daughter Heidi. Kathi is pregnant with Heather.
Sadly, Kathi passed away in 2013. Here is here obituary: https://www.dignitymemorial.com/en-ca/obituaries/ann-arbor-mi/kathleen-england-5734715

General Discussion / Re: Accurate edition of Apollo 11 (2019) movie?
« on: January 31, 2023, 01:14:53 pm »
Thanks for your message. I think I must have been that person at Goddard screening the film in 2019.

The movie contains many inaccuracies. Many :/ I won't ruin the film for you by listing them.

With that said, it's still very very accurate on the spectrum of the film industry in general. Apollo in Real Time endeavours to always push towards accuracy because we don't have to be entertaining to a general audience in a movie theatre. I think the best intro for the Apollo 11 film would be to point out that it has been made as historically accurate as possible, but if it's accuracy your audience members crave, they should check out Apollo in Real Time, the Apollo Flight Journal, and the Apollo Lunar Surface Journal after the film.
